STEM Educator

 
The Jewish Day School of Metropolitan Seattle (JDS), a growing preschool through 8th grade independent school east of downtown Seattle, is currently accepting applications for a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Educator who will design and lead the school’s STEM initiative and facilitate its integration with our existing inquiry-based curriculum and themes.  While working with faculty and students campus wide, classroom experience will primarily be with 6th through 8th grade students in what is currently the school’s science lab.  The school has secured funding to transform the lab into a “STEM Innovation Lab” which will be an inspiring space with the tools and resources needed for students to create their own experiments, connect with experts globally and truly be active participants in their own learning.  The new STEM Educator will have an opportunity to help design and equip this engaging learning center.

JDS faculty members are part of a collaborative team of self-reflective, creative and passionate educators focused on developing the "whole child", nurturing individual identity, imagination and inquiring minds, in an open classroom setting.  The successful candidate should have experience developing and executing STEM curriculum using an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.

Position: Head of School
Start: July 2013

JDS is looking for a Head of School with a passion for Jewish day school education and an ability to clearly articulate the mission and vision of JDS to a varied constituency. The successful candidate will have the courage and wisdom to balance short-term goals with long-term vision. They will be the inspirational face and voice of the JDS community, will embody the school’s pluralistic values, and will build relationships in the community to achieve goals including enrollment, marketing, fundraising, program innovation and financial sustainability. This individual will be caring, creative, and perceptive with a deep sensitivity to the academic, spiritual and emotional well-being of our students and their families.

The Head of School is expected to be the leading force in executing the mission of the school and in developing appropriate policies in conjunction with the Board of Director’s Executive Committee. The powers and duties of the Head include: policy development and administration of personnel, salary, fundraising, academic and extracurricular matters. In addition, the Head of School is responsible for overseeing the management of the school’s financial and physical resources and assisting the Board of Directors in enlarging the school’s financial base.

Qualifications:

  • Passionate communicator and leader with the ability to establish strong relationships both with the school community and community at large.
  • Record of successful leadership and strong financial management oversight of a school.
  • Successful fundraising experience including enlargement of the major donor base.
  • An advanced degree in Education, Jewish Studies or related field
  • Personal advocate for Jewish education, preferably a Jewish educator
  • Embraces and understands educational technology
  • Working knowledge of the Hebrew language is preferred

Middle School Humanities Teacher

JDS is seeking a full-time Middle School Humanities teacher to begin the 2013-2014 school year.  The JDS middle school is a collaborative team of professionals who teach the whole child. JDS is moving to an inquiry based approach to learning and is redesigning its Science Lab into a STEM Innovation Lab. The desired teacher will have the opportunity to work with other colleagues interested being a part of transforming a school into a 21st century learning environment. Ongoing professional development provided by the school.

Qualifications for this position include:  Masters in teaching or equivalent and at least three years of teaching experience in Middle School. Ability to differentiate learning;  Knowledge of Positive Discipline or Responsive Classroom is preferable; Exceptional oral and written communication skills and a desire to collaborate with parents, community professionals, and the Middle School teaching team;  Personal qualities include compassion, flexibility, strong time management skills. Learning Specialist

The Jewish Day School (JDS) is seeking a full-time Middle School Learning Specialist to begin the 2013-2014 school year.

Qualifications for this position include:  Certification in Special Education, with students who have mild learning differences; Teaching experience with expertise in the development of organization and study skills, executive function strategies, reading comprehension, written expression, and math. Ability to differentiate learning;  Knowledge of Positive Discipline or Responsive Classroom is preferable; Exceptional oral and written communication skills and a desire to collaborate with parents, community professionals, and the Middle School teaching team;  Personal qualities include compassion, flexibility, strong time management skills. Applicants need not be Jewish.   

The role of the Middle School Learning Specialist includes the following:

  • Providing ongoing small group academic instruction based on classroom curriculum, with a focus on student learning needs
  • Developing self-advocacy, study / organizational skills and long term project planning
  • Providing Student Accommodation Plans for qualifying students with coordination of class room implementation  
  • Collaborating with teachers for modifications, accommodations and student status
  • Developing Student Support Plans with individualized learning goals
  • Coordinating and participating in Child Study Team meetings
  • Communicating regularly with parents and outside tutors
  • Participating in parent/teacher conferences
  • Writing Student progress report cards twice yearly
  • Providing liaison services for: psychological/psychiatric services, educational testing with private agency or public schools, speech and language evaluations, specialized tutoring
  • Supporting the transition to High School for 8th Grade students

The Middle School Learning Specialist follows a Resource Room model, is a member of the Learning Resource Center staff, and is an integral part of the Middle School team.

Third Grade Judaic Studies Teacher

The Jewish Day School of Metropolitan Seattle (JDS) is currently accepting applications for an experienced, elementary Judaic Studies teacher for the 2013-2014 school year (.75 FTE). JDS offers academic excellence through a challenging, integrated curriculum of secular and Judaic studies. Faculty members are part of a collaborative team of creative and passionate educators focused on developing the “whole-child” by cultivating individual identity, imagination and inquiry. Preference will be given to those candidates who have a Bachelor’s Degree and at least 3 years of elementary teaching experience; who are able to lead T’Fillah (prayer), who are knowledgeable and passionate about teaching Torah and Judaic social studies; who understand and will be able to implement an integrated and differentiated model for instruction; and who have a strong foundation in Judaic Studies and current educational practices. A foundation in Hebrew language is also a plus.
