Flexible Tuition - Jewish Day School

Flexible Tuition

The Jewish Day School recognizes that the primary responsibility for financing a student’s education rests with his or her family. Our school values an inclusive, economically diverse community. Each year, JDS makes a significant commitment to families in need of assistance. Approximately 50% of JDS students take part in our Flexible Tuition Program. A significant portion of the dollars to support Flexible Tuition for our families come from the Samis Foundation and from the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. Flexible Tuition is available for families with students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade. If you have a student in Elementary School and/or Middle School and Early Childhood, your family may apply for Flexible Tuition.

Funding a Jewish Day School Education
Those families who feel they cannot meet the full tuition obligation are encouraged to apply for the Flexible Tuition Program. To the extent that funds permit, Flexible Tuition is awarded to families who qualify and who complete the application process in a timely manner, including the submission of financial information. Financial information shared by families applying for assistance is held in strict confidence.

What is Flexible Tuition?
Flexible Tuition is a program that helps to ensure access to a Jewish education for all and to continue socio-economic diversity in our schools’ student body. Flexible Tuition allows families to apply for reduced tuition, in contrast to applying for a “grant” or an “award.” It is reflective of a family paying their fair share of tuition with respect to their financial picture.

How much can I expect to pay in tuition?

How is Flexible Tuition Different from Financial Aid?
The Flexible Tuition model has a different approach to Financial Aid. Rather than focusing on an award or grant, it shifts is to, what level of tuition can my family afford and what is the fair share that they pay for tuition.

How will you know if you are eligible for the Flexible Tuition Program?
Every family can apply for Flexible Tuition. Families must apply through an online tool called FAST and submit the required documentation before they can be reviewed. Failure to submit all documentation by all stated deadlines can result in the applications inability to be reviewed and/or withdrawal of the Flexible Tuition.

Do I need to apply every year?
Yes. JDS requires families who would like to participate and qualify for the program to apply each year so that tuition levels can be adjusted as needed based on changes in circumstances.

Who reviews our application?
All applications are confidential and are reviewed by a small committee comprised of community members.
