What does it mean to be a Green School?
JDS has a strong environmental commitment – it’s rooted in the Jewish principle of Tikkun Olam which means “repairing the world.” JDS is also proud of its participation in the King County Green School Program. Our goal is to achieve the highest possible level to attain- Sustaining Green School.
Green Team
Our 5th grade Green Team researches and initiates school-wide green projects, communicates initiatives to fellow students and the greater JDS community, and monitors waste reduction and energy conservation throughout the year through guided mentorship and intentional results.
On Campus
Sustainability and environmental awareness are woven into the school’s inquiry-based curriculum. Units of study allow students to “dig deep” for a rich understanding of various environmental issues and collaborate on solutions or projects to improve our own environmental stewardship.
- Worm Bin/Compost Container for grass clippings and other landscape cleanup.
- Recycling Boxes to collect batteries and markers.
- Recycled materials for art projects across all grades throughout the year.
- Planting and maintaining community gardens throughout the campus.
- Committing to the use of re-usable water bottles and food packaging.

The annual schoolwide “Solutions in Science Expo” is an opportunity for all learners to learn about and participate in science-related projects based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Projects in 2023 ranged from inventing a machine to safely clean the ocean, to experimenting with force and motion through derby car racing, to designing tiny home villages to address the homeless crisis in Seattle.
