Joint Announcement from JDS of Seattle and Congregation Herzl-Ner Tamid

Congregation Herzl-Ner Tamid (HNT) and the Jewish Day School of Seattle (JDS) are thrilled to announce a historic new step in our relationship. We are delighted to unveil an extraordinary partnership that will create a brand-new home for JDS on HNT’s campus on Mercer Island.

Our Shared Journey: After two years of careful planning, HNT and JDS are joining forces to design and construct a new space for JDS. This exciting milestone follows the City of Mercer Island’s approval to add schools as an approved use on a parcel of land owned by HNT that is already zoned for commercial buildings. Our joint vision builds upon existing synergies and fosters deeper collaborations to strengthen the cherished tapestry of our shared Jewish community while retaining the identity and character of each organization.

Cultivating a Community Hub: Currently in the design phase, the building will not only serve as a new home for JDS but will also be a home for other Jewish organizations, including classrooms for HNT’s Frankel Religious School and shared spaces available for community use. Several organizations in the Jewish community have expressed their support and enthusiasm for this collaborative project:

This partnership between JDS and Herzl illustrates how collaboration among schools and community institutions strengthens all the parties involved. Locating JDS adjacent to Herzl and across from the SJCC creates enrollment and enrichment synergies that few, if any, other locations could provide. Mazal tov to the leaders of both institutions for dreaming big and taking bold action.

With its easy access to I-90 and public transit, ample parking, and inviting outdoor spaces this new hub is well-positioned to be a focal point for shared community resources and programming. In addition, the proximity to the Stroum Jewish Community Center promises to infuse added vitality into our communal culture.

Stay Tuned: In the coming months, we will unveil an array of exciting developments, including design plans, the addition of other organizations, and a project timeline. Fueled by the commitment of our diligent volunteers as well as the City’s endorsement for school use, we are thrilled to embark on this historic journey.

Questions: We understand that questions may arise, and we welcome them. As we journey forward, we are committed to transparent and timely communications to pave a seamless path for this harmonious partnership.

Warm Wishes for Shana Tova U’Metuka: As we embark upon our shared vision, we extend heartfelt wishes for a sweet and joyous Jewish New Year. May the year 5784 usher in new partnerships, shared triumphs, and boundless blessings for our entire community.
